2013 The Summer of Submersion

I'm not particularly the most religious man but if a bearded fellow wearing a robe was making a large arc-like structure across my fence line this past summer I probably would have gone over and picked up a nail gun. A Montana fly fishing guide in the above photo said “its a good summer for swimming!” My trip to Montana proved redeeming especially during hopper season. Sam stayed in the nether region and fished around West Virginia with some frustrating end of the season grumbling. The slogan “adversity introduces a man to himself” comes to mind. I was reminded of this reading one of Clint Bova's “shop notes” blog entries. He seems to have the right reflections on the summer of 2013. It was a lot like a cat and mouse circumstance, and the cat sometimes mistook his tail for a mouse. There was a boat load of rainfall, lets just call a spade a spade. There were no limitations of where you could get your line wet, all you had to do was step outside the door. The only requirement was that you had to have a life preserver and have the US Coast Guard on your speed dial!

I have not quite taken up golf yet but did go to a putt putt golf course outside of Charleston in the fall. Could not get the ball in the fishes mouth, subtle divine intervention needless to say. The spring of 2014 could break the bank....why?, I may have to invest in a very large fish tank stocked with native trout and a concession stand with a sign that reads “fish by the hour no life preserver needed”

2013 Fishing Conditions

The Fishing in West Virginia so far this summer has been spotty at best. Actually the North East has been downright frustrating in general this year even private water! Flood stage conditions, high winds, run off, and drastic temperature changes have been keeping us on the edge of our seats. This year is the first season I have experienced in my entire fishing timeline that I can remember exponential and numerous fly fishing roadblocks when it comes to environmental conditions. I was telling my best fishing buddy Sam that I need to distract myself from fishing this year or else I would be taking up Golf! He looked at me and said “wow Dave you must be pretty hungry for some good fishing” yes, yes I am.

So I am officially packing up and heading West today for a long stint in Colorado and Montana. I'm going to take a “North Eastern Hiatus” and go Westward ho. Car was packed last night and  have Hoppers and cane rod in hand. Hopefully my next blog entry will not be about visiting a Golf pro shop and picking up a first set of clubs!
